__Eureka Math__We are piloting the first two modules of Eureka Math. This program is perfectly aligned with the Common Core standards. This program encourages the students to think deeper and to understand the "why's" of math and not just the "how's". Instead of rotely memorizing an algorithm or method of solving a type of problem, students are asked to reason through why they perform each step. This will allow the student to think beyond the examples on the worksheet and be able to apply the concepts to other math situations.

__Number Theory and Place Value__

August - September

Our year begins with refreshing our basic math concepts. Place value and knowing the relationship between the different places will be our first focus. Understanding, for instance, that a digit in the 100's place is 10 times larger than the same digit in the 10's place (800 is 10 times as big as 80). Students will read and write numbers up through the hundred millions place. We will also compare numbers through the thousandths place. We will create arrays and display numbers in terms of rows and columns - with writing matching number sentences. Finally, we will compare numbers, including decimals, and place numbers in ascending or descending order.

__Estimation, Rounding and Computation__

October - November

We will use our knowledge of place value to round decimals to any place. We will also add, subtract, and multiply decimals down to the hundredths place. Hopefully students have been practicing their basic multiplication facts since we will jump into multiplying whole numbers and decimals (3 digits times 2 digits). We will use estimating to check our answers for reasonableness.

Geometry

Geometry

November - December

In our geometry unit we will learn how to classify and organize polygons based on their attributes. We will identify the different types of quadrilaterals and be able to compare and contrast them. We will identify and compare triangles - identifying them as isosceles, right, and scalene triangles - and as obtuse, acute, and right triangles. Finally, we will create a hierarchy for polygons and be able to explain the relationships between each of the polygons.

__Division__

January - February

In our division unit, is it important for students to be able to use the standard algorithm to find quotients using long division. However, it may even be more important for them to understand what is really happening at each step. This is why we spend time working with compatible numbers and Base 10 blocks to solve division problems before we jump into just memorizing the steps to long division.

Their answers may or may not have remainders and students will need to interpret what to do with the remainder. Our divisors (number we are dividing by) and dividends (the number we are dividing) can be whole numbers or decimals.**
